ANSWER THESE 3 QUESTIONS TO HELP IDENTIFY YOUR BRAND
Branding seems so elusive, doesn’t it? Most people think branding is a stellar logo, some complimentary colors and the newest, trending fonts. While these are all important, branding is so much more than that. It’s your first impression when someone visits you for the first time, it’s why they choose you over the competition, and it’s the reason they keep coming back. Did you know it takes only 7 seconds for a potential customer to make a decision about your brand? Good branding will answer the who, how, and what about your brand in that 7 seconds.
Your brand should have an identity, in other words, who is your brand? If your brand were a person, how would it introduce itself? If it had to describe its appearance, how would it do so?
Let’s take for example Apple. When you think of Apple, you think of simple, sleek, and minimalistic designs with innovative products at the forefront of technology. In fact, if Apple were a person, we already know who it would be. It would be Justin Long. Anyone else remember the PC vs. Mac ad campaigns from the mid 2000’s?!
The next question your brand should answer is the How. Your brand should have a personality, in other words, how does your brand behave? Is your brand voice more serious or is it more witty and fun? Are you as snarky as Taco Bell on twitter, as unifying as Coca-Cola, or as modern as Whole Foods? Once you figure out your brand voice, your marketing will come easier and your audience will relate to you more.
Your brand should elicit an emotion or provide an experience, in other words, what impression does your brand leave? What is the distinguishing factor your brand will be remembered for? One of the best and easiest ways to do that is with a tagline. “Just Do It”, “I’m Lovin’ It”, “Get More, Pay Less”, “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good”. Without even saying the company name, you know who the brand is, what they stand for, and you remember them for it.
