How to Prepare for a Content Shoot

We LOVE a good photoshoot. Who doesn’t? What some may not look forward to is the planning. In our book, a good content shoot is as good as its strategy planned ahead of time. If organizing the details for an upcoming shoot is a non-starter for you, don’t stress. We’ve put together a quick checklist on how to get the most out of your upcoming content shoot.

  1. Campaign Strategy

How are you going to target your audience through this content? Think of a new or updated way to do so, while continuing to speak to the ethos of your brand and keeping in mind what has worked for you in the past. Putting these two together is where the magic happens.

  2. Inspiration

Figure out what’s inspiring you right NOW. Inspiration can come from anywhere and strike at any moment, so find that spark and use it. Scroll Pinterest, read about what’s trending, and see what your customers are inspired by, talking about & asking for.

  3. Put together a thorough shot list.

We’re talking specifics–individual products, product collections, themes, etc. There’s nothing worse than walking out of a content shoot & remembering that one shot you forgot to get.

  4. Wardrobe + Hair + Makeup

This is the fun part. Once the first 3 steps are solidified, plan your looks ahead of time. Though some content shoots involve more looks than others, taking care of these details ahead of time will always bring peace of mind on shoot day. Don’t forget to book hair stylists and makeup artists for the day if needed!

  5. Have a complete inventory list on hand.

Knowing your inventory is key–what is current, what is new, and what is on its way out. Keeping these things in mind will help you photograph the products that are most relevant to the upcoming season. Don’t waste great imagery on products that are about to be discontinued & make that content as evergreen as possible!

  6. Props

Sometimes a little something extra can go a long way. Think of the inspo behind your campaign and the season in which it will be promoted. Below are some examples from ads we have run for our clients:
